Segler-Verein Wakenitz e.V.
Segler-Verein Wakenitz e.V. is a long-established sailing club in Lübeck, founded in 1930, with its home base on the River Wakenitz at Schäferstraße and a summer centre at the Schanzenberg sailing base on Lake Ratzeburg in Groß Sarau. The club combines regatta racing, leisure sailing and a strong community spirit across two sites with a clubhouse, boat hall, moorings and wheelchair-accessible club grounds. An active youth section trains on Saturdays in Optimist, Europe, 420er and Pirat classes; inclusive sailing with RS Venture and 2.4mR has been part of the programme for more than ten years. Activities include club regattas, Schanzenberg Open, the Blaues Band long-distance race, sailing holidays, children's festivals and community work – welcoming beginners, families and competitive sailors alike.
History
Segler-Verein Wakenitz e.V. was founded in 1930 and has since grown into a club where sailing, community and voluntary commitment are central. Over the decades the club became a fixture in the Lübeck and Lauenburg sailing scene, with regular club races, group cruises and active social life on land and water. The home base on the Wakenitz in Lübeck with clubhouse and boat hall is the year-round centre; meetings, school partnerships and the traditional Grog Regatta in autumn take place here. In summer, activity shifts mainly to the Schanzenberg base on Lake Ratzeburg in Groß Sarau, where boats are kept, training and regattas are held. The club is especially proud of its large youth group, which introduces children and teenagers to sailing in Optimists and dinghies and later in classes such as Europe, 420er and Pirat. For more than ten years, accessible sailing has been a core offering; since 2015 RS Venture Connect and 2.4mR boats have supported parasailing, funded by sponsors and honoured in 2019 with the Schleswig-Holstein citizens' award for volunteering. The club hosts traditional events such as the Blaues Band on Lake Ratzeburg and Schanzenberg Open, takes part in regional regattas and maintains close cooperation, for example with the Schule an der Wakenitz. Community work, inclusion, tradition and openness to new sailors characterise the SVW to this day.
