Stettiner Yacht-Club e.V. Lübeck
Stettiner Yacht-Club e.V. Lübeck is a traditional sailing and motorboating club on the Old Fairway of the Untertrave near Bad Schwartau on Teerhofsinsel. The nature-oriented club harbour offers berths 15 m long and up to 4.5 m wide, a crane for masts and boats up to about seven tonnes, renovated sanitary facilities and Wi-Fi. Youth work is a particular focus: children and teenagers learn to sail safely on Optimist and Conger dinghies, with regular training and a winter programme in the clubhouse. Founded in 1877 in Stettin and registered in Lübeck since 1948, the club combines cruising, racing and camaraderie with a long Pomeranian sailing tradition.
History
On 29 October 1877, 26 members founded the „Verein Stettiner Ruderer und Segler“ in Stettin. After the rowers left, the club was renamed „Verein Stettiner Segler“ in 1886 and „Stettiner Yacht-Club Corporation“ in 1891. Kaiser Wilhelm II donated prizes for sea races off Swinemünde; the club joined the German Sailing Association and adopted its blue burgee with a red griffin. With its own harbour in Frauendorf and later the large club harbour in Gotzlow, it became a centre of Pomeranian sailing and led the Pommernwochen. In 1922 the youth section became the Greifen-Club; membership peaked at 382. After World War II, flight and the loss of the Stettin facilities, the club was re-registered in 1948 at the Lübeck district court under VR 840 on the initiative of Commodore Schell. Via berths on the Wakenitz, at Priwall and in Passathafen Travemünde, club life continued until the 1982 groundbreaking for today’s harbour on the Old Arm of the Trave and the 1986 inauguration of clubhouse and harbour built by members’ own work. The club received the Federal President’s sports plaque. Later decades brought pier renewals, a boathouse, renovations with grant funding and the rebuilding of the youth group at the club harbour with Optimists and Congers. In 2015 contacts with Szczecin were deepened; in 2017 the club celebrated its 140th founding anniversary at the Schiffergesellschaft in Lübeck. At the start of 2017 the club had 166 members.
