Sternberger Seglerverein e.V.
Sternberger Seglerverein e.V. is a traditional sailing club on Lake Sternberger See in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. On the club grounds, children and juniors train with club-owned Optimist and Laser dinghies under a volunteer coaching team; for seniors, racing and cruising are central. The programme includes weekly beginners' training, the junior sailing certificate, regional and national regattas, and summer training camps. Highlights include the Sternberg Cities Comparison Race since 1956 and the Sternberg Finn Regatta since 2000; the club also hosts Ixylon championships. Over more than 60 years of club history, nationally and internationally successful sailors have emerged, including Olympic sailors and world champions in the 470 class.
History
As early as 1898 a watersports club (boat community) was founded in Sternberg on today's club grounds; members were craftsmen and merchants, with rowing and paddling boats. On 21 April 1948 the Sternberg sports community was founded, becoming BSG Aufbau Sternberg in 1949/1950. Under Werner Brandt a watersports section with 16 members was formed, renamed sailing section in 1950 and sailing section (Sektion Segeln) in 1952. Karl Banse, who moved from Schwerin to Sternberg in 1948, brought the first national-class sailing dinghy (Küken) to the lake; organised sailing there began in 1949. In 1956 Sternberg Pirate crews attended Mecklenburg Sailing Week and invited Pirate sailors from Güstrow, Brüel and Schwerin: the birth of the Sternberg Cities Comparison Race. From 1956 to 1969 only Pirates raced; from 1970 Optimist, Cadet, 420 and OK were added, Ixylon in 1973, and Finn from 1971 to 1976. From 1974 the event was split in two; from 1985 to 1988 Polish Optimist and Cadet sailors took part. In 1990 the last GDR championship and in 1991 the first German Ixylon championship were held on the lake; the club hosted again in 1998, 2009 and 2017 (IDM). Since 2000 the club has run the Sternberg Finn Regatta as part of the Grand Prix of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Today juniors train on club Optimists and Lasers, and the club hosts major regional regattas and championships.
