Segelgemeinschaft Riegsee e.V.
Segelgemeinschaft Riegsee e.V. (SGR) is a sailing club on Lake Riegsee near Murnau in the Upper Bavarian Alpine foothills, about an hour's drive south of Munich. The club offers a well-kept boat yard with space for around 50 dinghies, a slipway, a pier for nearly 20 boats, and a clubhouse with terrace and about 35 seats. Four annual yardstick regattas and the club championship shape the season, alongside youth week, sailing camps and club evenings on the first Saturday of each month. Founded in 1976, SGR today has around 100 members and sails classes such as Varianta, Dehler 22, ILCA, Fam, Finn-Dinghy, Optimist and Flying Dutchman without a class obligation.
History
In the early 1970s the first small sailing boats appeared on Lake Riegsee. On 6 January 1976 seven sailors leased a wild lakeside plot from the Brugger family to store their boats. To maintain the shared yard and represent sailors' interests they founded Segelgemeinschaft Riegsee e.V. (SGR) with Walter Klotz as first chairman. Membership grew quickly that year; the first regatta on the lake saw nine boats. In 1977 a first wooden floating pontoon was built and SGR hosted the German Sunflower championship. In 1978 the club gained a club room in the cellar of the Brugger campsite building and hosted the Contender Cowbellcup. Late in the 1970s SGR bought a Jollenkreuzer Lis as committee boat. In 1984 the pontoon was replaced by a new wooden floating pier. In 1985 SGR hosted the Bavarian 505 championship. In 1986 the club celebrated its tenth anniversary. In 1988 and 1990 Sunflowers and a Teeny were bought for the youth section. In 1991 earthworks levelled the slope and created more boat spaces. In 1992 a Fam became start and training boat; inland sportboat licence training began with Segelschule Marx, together with a Laser match-race series. Ski-yachting started in 1995. In 1996 the access road was rebuilt and sea sportboat and BR licence training introduced. In 1997 an aluminium floating pontoon and flagpole followed. In 2000 the Akropolis equipment shed was built. In 2001 SGR celebrated 25 years. In 2002 a historic shipping anchor was donated to the yard. In 2005 an Optimist joined the youth fleet; in 2006 the website went live. In 2008 the new clubhouse with daylight and terrace opened. In 2012 a Varianta K4 replaced the Fam as start and training boat. In 2015 the clubhouse received a roof and timber cladding. In 2016 another Optimist and two Lasers strengthened the youth fleet. In 2018 the pontoon decking was renewed; in 2020 the website was updated. Today SGR is based on the Brugger family's grounds, has around 100 members and hosts four yardstick regattas each year plus a public summer festival in July. In 2026 the club marks its 50th anniversary.
