Reial Club Nàutic de Tarragona
The Reial Club Nàutic de Tarragona, founded in 1878, is Spain's oldest rowing club and a multi-sport nautical centre at Port Esportiu de Tarragona on the Costa Daurada. Alongside a long rowing tradition covering Olympic rowing, coastal rowing and traditional llagut boats, the club runs a dedicated sailing section with Optimist, 420, sailing school, adult courses and cruiser racing. Facilities include a clubhouse, gym, sauna, outdoor pool, padel courts and boat storage options. Young sailors train in the Escola de Vela and rowing groups from age eight upwards, while adults enjoy courses, regattas and activities from surfski to social events. The club is preparing its 150th anniversary in 2028, combining maritime heritage with modern community sport in Tarragona.
History
The Reial Club Nàutic de Tarragona was founded in 1878 and is considered Spain's oldest rowing club and the first of its kind in Catalonia. In its early years it was nicknamed the club of the 'xiflats', as contemporaries could not understand how young members enjoyed rowing and sailing like local fishermen. The first clubhouse stood in the Serrallo district; construction of a new building began in 1917, but a Francolí river flood destroyed it in 1930. After reconstruction, Civil War bombing damaged the premises again, and the building was not restored until 1945. During the 1960s the Escola de Marineria spread enthusiasm for sea sports among Tarragona's youth, leading to numerous national and regional titles displayed in the clubhouse. The construction of a new marina outside the commercial port and cooperation with the Port Authority of Tarragona paved the way for the current headquarters, inaugurated in 1997 by H.M. King Juan Carlos I. The 125th anniversary in 2003 marked a young, dynamic club that promotes nautical sports and respect for the sea every day. Today the club is preparing its 150th anniversary in 2028 with a programme of conferences and events, bringing together rowing, sailing, padel, surfski and a rich social life by the Mediterranean.
