Real Club Náutico de Castro-Urdiales
Real Club Náutico de Castro-Urdiales is a traditional yacht and sailing club on the Cantabrian coast in the harbour of Castro-Urdiales on the Bay of Biscay. The clubhouse stands in the centre of the basin and offers a restaurant, bar, terraces, solarium, library, showers and moorings with marina staff service. The programme includes a sailing school for children and adults, year-round regattas, youth courses, deep-sea fishing and nautical qualification courses. Notable is the 1958 rationalist club building with its V-shaped roof, linking more than sixty years of club history with active maritime life on the Cantabrian Sea.
History
The history of Real Club Náutico de Castro-Urdiales reaches back to the early days of recreational sailing in the early twentieth century. In 1906 engineer Manuel Ganendio first tried to build a yacht club in then-villa Castro Urdiales; the plan failed but set the foundation for the later site. Castro later also had a floating meeting place nicknamed “Deuda Flotante”. King Alfonso XIII visited the town five times in a nautical context; in 1909 Castro Urdiales received city status. On 3 August 1955 a commission met in the town hall to found and build a clubhouse. In August 1958 the club headquarters was inaugurated under president Vicente Herrera. The rationalist building by architect Gabriel de la Torriente and engineer Agustín Gómez Obregón stands on piles over the water, is linked to the quay by a walkway and is heritage-listed. With its characteristic V-roof like seagull wings and more than sixty years of existence, the club remains a family-friendly hub for sea activities in Castro-Urdiales.
