Prenzlauer Segel-Club e.V.
Prenzlauer Segel-Club e.V. is located on the north-western shore of Lake Unteruckersee in Prenzlau, directly on the Berlin–Usedom cycle path, with a view of the town and St Mary’s Church. The club has a boathouse with common rooms, modernised toilets and showers and a newly fitted kitchen, plus a slipway and two jetties with water depths of up to two metres. Besides recreational sailing, the club runs several club regattas each year, including the traditional Kofferregatta for the Beez-und-Jeske Cup, and offers guest berths for water travellers. The next generation of sailors is growing, and the grounds are being made accessible step by step; guests and members find a quiet inland sailing area with nature-oriented anchorages.
History
In 1975 five friends decided out of love of sailing to build their own dinghies. After one year the first boats were afloat; a jetty was built with the owner’s consent at the fittings works, and more and more people discovered sailing. On 1 January 1977 the sailing section of the Armaturen works sports community was officially founded. Through youth work membership and boat numbers grew; the first regattas and annual cruising events followed. Prenzlau has a closed sailing area of two lakes of about 11 square kilometres each, linked by a canal; links to other areas or the coast require overland transport. Members nevertheless sail each year on the Mecklenburg lakes and the Baltic; the longest cruise went via Baltic and North Sea through Scotland and back. After 1990 the sailing section became Prenzlauer Segel-Club e.V. With help from the town of Prenzlau the site became municipal property; the 1994 hereditary building lease laid the material foundation for further development. In the following years members built a new jetty system and renovated the clubhouse. The club currently has about 40 members with 25 sailing boats, from open dinghies to long-keelers; regattas are mostly scored by yardstick. The clubhouse offers common rooms, modernised sanitary facilities and a new kitchen also for guest berth holders. There is a slipway and two jetties with up to two metres depth. Because a member became wheelchair-dependent after an accident, the grounds are being made accessible: access to jetty and terrace and a boarding platform have already been adapted; barrier-free conversion of the club building is planned for the coming years.
