Lübecker Segler-Verein von 1885 e.V. is among Germany's oldest sailing clubs, with a boathouse and clubhouse on the Wakenitz in the heart of Lübeck. A second site with marina and holiday houses lies at Schanzenberg on Lake Ratzeburg. The club offers jetties, a slipway, a youth fleet and catering, sailing Optimist, Teeny, ILCA, Pirate, OK Dinghy, Finn Dinghy, O Dinghy, H-Boat, 15 sqm dinghy cruisers and J/70. Regular youth and adult training, taster sailing, a school sailing club and many regattas up to the German Sailing Bundesliga shape the programme. Since its founding in 1885 the club has combined recreational sailing, youth development and an active racing tradition on the Wakenitz and Lake Ratzeburg.
History
On 27 July 1885, 19 gentlemen met at Schmeckebier's premises and founded the Verein Lübecker Segler. Pleasure sailing from Königsberg had reached Lübeck in 1884; after the short-lived Lübecker Segel Club dissolved, 19 merchants, clerks and craftsmen continued racing on the Wakenitz, Schlutuper Wiek and from 1890 on Lake Ratzeburg. First races with Segler-Club Hansa followed in 1903. In 1908 the club leased a 200 m² water plot on the Wakenitz and built its own boathouse with mooring field; by its 25th anniversary it had 80 members. Further land was leased in 1913, 1923 and 1926. After World War I the club was renamed Lübecker Segler-Verein von 1885 in 1920, joined the German Sailing Federation and opened the new mess on the Wakenitzufer; a year later it admitted its first female member. In 1927 a youth section was organised, with lodgings at Rothenhusen from 1929. Jochen Kulbors raised funds for youth work; the Kulbors guild continues today. After Rothenhusen East was ceded to the Soviet zone, the Schanzenberg colony was founded. Boathouse II was built in 1954; Finn Dinghy and especially Pirate shaped the youth fleet. In 1956/57 the Ratzeburg Lake racing association and the Oyhmelei were created. Five Micky boats for juniors were launched in 1957. A new harbour at the former fishing port opened in 1963/64; in 1965 the LSV hosted the German championships for 15 sqm dinghy cruisers. German titles followed in Conger (1977), Varianta (1980, 1985, 1994, 2001, 2009) and Schwertzugvogel (1986). New sanitary facilities (1982) and a youth house (1984) were built at Schanzenberg. Cooperation with Thomas Mann School began in 1986. From 1991 a home-built ice-sailing fleet raced. Schanzenberg Open started with Segler-Club Hansa in 2005; a pillar crane followed in 2008 and a boat wash in 2011. In 2009 the club celebrated 125 years and launched Wakenitzkids. Today the LSV is the oldest sailing club founded in Schleswig-Holstein and among Germany's 20 oldest sailing clubs.
