Lindauer Segler-Club e.V.

Lindauer Segler-Club e.V. is one of the most traditional sailing clubs on Lake Constance and was founded in 1889 on Lindau island. At Segelhafen 3, the club operates a historically grown harbour with 110 water berths, 50 dinghy spaces ashore, a modern clubhouse with the Mole 3 restaurant, and shipyard facilities in Zech. Classes sailed include Optimist, 29er, ILCA 7, 420er, 470er, J/70, H-Boot and the legendary 8mR yacht Bayern II. For children from age seven and youths up to 27, the LSC offers structured training, regatta success up to European and world championship level, and trial sailing on Thursdays from 5 p.m. The club hosts the RUND UM long-distance regatta, Wednesday races, Optimist and class regattas, and has nearly 700 members.

History

On 20 February 1889, the Lindauer Segler-Club was founded at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof. Fifteen members wanted to get on the water; they belonged mainly to Lindau's upper middle class and nobility. After initial enthusiasm, the young club fell into crisis and barely avoided dissolution around 1900. With the founders' sons, fortunes improved: in 1911 the present sailing harbour and a small clubhouse were built. The lost First World War, the revolution and the transition to the Weimar Republic also affected the club. In 1919 members were mainly from the bourgeoisie or upper middle class. This social stratum lost its economic base during the 1920s crisis, which also hit the sailing club. In the midst of the depression the LSC built its new clubhouse. In the 1930s employees and craftsmen joined; youth was no longer only grammar-school pupils. In 1937 the club bought Bodan/Bayern II, an 8mR yacht built by Abeking & Rasmussen – central to LSC identity and member cohesion. After the war, requisitioned boats and occupied harbour facilities had to be recovered step by step; rebuilding began with the simplest means and members' own labour. After the Second World War the LSC held the 1st RUND UM in 1951. In the 1960s the club acquired parts of the shipyard harbour and built Halle Zech in 1970. In a major effort in 1992/1993 the new clubhouse was completed. Since then: south mole extension, slope renovation, Lochbrunner-Allee, Halle Zech extension, new swimming and shipyard pontoons. In 2006 the LSC organised the Eighth 8mR World Championship. Membership has grown sharply over recent decades; today the club has nearly 700 members.
