Lübecker Yacht-Club e.V.

The Lübecker Yacht-Club e.V. (LYC) has been one of Germany's leading sailing clubs since 1898, with more than 800 members and three locations in Lübeck and Travemünde. At the clubhouse on the Wakenitz river, there is space for around 100 dinghies, the youth section and fleets of 12-foot dinghies and H-boats; in Travemünde, berths are available at Leuchtenfeld, Passathafen and Mövenstein with a catamaran and dinghy centre. The club promotes youth training, taster courses, regatta sailing up to the German Sailing League and offshore sailing on the training ship MEU. As founder and co-organiser of the Travemünder Woche, held since 1889, the LYC has a lasting influence on the international regatta scene on Lübeck Bay.

History

The Lübecker Yacht-Club was founded on 30 August 1898 to organise the Travemünder Woche – an event that has been held since 1889 and has grown into one of the world's largest sailing events. For more than 125 years, the LYC has looked back on a rich history of sailing and, with more than 800 members, ranks among Germany's leading sailing clubs. The clubhouse in Lübeck has been located on the Stadtwakenitz since 1920 and has since been rebuilt; the grounds accommodate around 100 dinghies, the youth section, the nostalgic 12-foot dinghy fleet and the H-boat fleet Lübeck. The building houses the club office as well as the offices of Travemünder Woche gGmbH and LYC Marketing GmbH. With the Leuchtenfeld clubhouse in Travemünde, the LYC maintains a second clubhouse built in 1865 as a lifeboat station and extensively renovated after years of use as a regatta station; it has been available to members since summer 2017. At Leuchtenfeld, the sports harbour offers around 70 berths, with a further roughly 180 in Passathafen behind the four-masted barque PASSAT restored in 1998. The seaside resort at Mövenstein in Travemünde, built in 1925 by Lübeck's city architect F.W. Vierck, is the third location; in 1994 the LYC acquired the 15,000 sqm site. It houses the catamaran and dinghy centre with 300 berths and a purpose-built slipway giving access to the Baltic Sea. The club is home to the revived 12-foot dinghy class Fleet North, is a member of the Schleswig-Holstein Sailing Association and the German Sailing Association, and a founding member of the German Sailing League. In addition to the Travemünder Woche, the LYC organises many other regatta formats and offers more than 800 sailors a sporting and social home on the Wakenitz, Trave and Baltic Sea.
