Wassersportverein Luv-up Jemgum e.V.
Wassersportverein Luv-up Jemgum e.V. is a traditional sailing and watersports club on the tidal River Ems in Jemgum, East Frisia. At Fährpatt 5 the club maintains a harbour with floating pontoons and the Bootshuus Luv up clubhouse as a meeting place for members and guests. The club hosts the long-standing Rökeltour for yachts and cruiser dinghies as well as the Müggenmarkt regatta for Optimists and dinghies, and runs an active youth section with sailing camps. The programme also includes joint season-opening sails in the Ems, Leda and Jümme area, talks in the Bootshuus and a lively club life around harbour and clubhouse. Since the centenary in 2012 and the new clubhouse around 2020/2021, Luv up has been a firm fixture of the East Frisian sailing scene.
History
Wassersportverein Luv-up Jemgum e.V. looks back on a long history at the Ems harbour in Jemgum and celebrated its centenary in 2012 with major regattas and festivities. As early as the 1960s and 1970s the club was active in regattas on the Ems and on the Gandersum–Borkum course; in 1979 Luv up bought an Optimist for the youth. In the 1980s there were awards for long membership and large Optimist and dinghy fleets off Jemgum. In 1997 the first Jemgum Rökeltour was held; it has since become the season-closing regatta for larger boats and cruiser dinghies with smoked fish as prizes and was later expanded by the Family Cruisers Cup. In the 2000s the club shaped the regional scene with Ems Cup wins, clubhouse extensions and disputes over damage from Ems deepening; in 2007 it sued the federal government over Ems damage. In 2011 a woman first took the club presidency; the same decade brought German championship titles from Jemgum and strong youth work with Optimist success. After flood damage and demolition of the old clubhouse, a flood-protected new clubhouse was built from 2019/2020 with public funding; the foundation stone and shell were completed in 2020, and club life returned to the new Bootshuus in 2021. Today Luv up still organises Rökeltour and Müggenmarkt regatta, invites neighbouring clubs to season-opening sails and offers floating pontoons and guest berths in the harbour.
