Krefelder Segler Vereinigung 1933 e.V.

The Krefelder Segler-Vereinigung 1933 e.V. (KSVg33) is the oldest and most traditional sailing club in Krefeld and the surrounding area. The club is located in the turning basin of Krefeld's commercial harbour at Latumer Straße 50 and offers moorings, a clubhouse with training rooms and a spacious boat hall for winter storage and boat work. With club boats such as Optimist and Varianta and its own boat lift, members promote sailing and motor boating and provide theoretical and practical training for juniors and adults. Regular courses for inland and sea sport boat licences, coastal skipper certification (SKS) and VHF radio certificates (UBI and SRC) complement an active club life with a weekly Wednesday club evening. The long-established youth section has repeatedly won the youth travelling trophy for Krefeld; the club organises the annual Krefeld offshore sailing city championship.

History

The roots of the Krefelder Segler-Vereinigung date back to the mid-1920s, when future founding members pursued sailing on the Rhine with self-built sailing canoes. Krefeld soon had one of the largest sailing canoe fleets on the Rhine, competing in German championships on the Wedau and Bertasee lakes in Essen; in 1934 founding member Heinz Bayer achieved an honourable second place in Essen. Concerned about independence, sailors founded the "Krefelder Segler-Vereinigung 33 e.V." on 21 May 1933. Boats initially lay on buoys between the dolphins on the west side of the Rhine harbour; in 1934 the city of Krefeld built a pontoon with boxes shared with the naval youth organisation. From 1935 to 1939 cruising and regatta activities followed. During the Second World War pier, accommodation and boats were completely destroyed. In 1949 the remaining members reunited and built a new pier from barrels and posts. In 1956 the first sea voyages to the North and Baltic Seas took place; in 1958 the clubhouse was inaugurated for the 25th anniversary and the club became a destination of Rhine Week. In 1960 the youth cutter "Hermann Knopp" was christened; in 1963 a new pier was built by members. In 1973 the club celebrated its 40th anniversary with the launch of new youth boats. In 1975 the club joined the Elfrather See water sports centre; in 1976 a larger wooden building was erected there. In 1981 the club acquired land at the turning basin and began building a hall and slipway. In 1983 it celebrated its 50th anniversary with the inauguration of new facilities at the turning basin of Krefeld's Rhine harbour. Since 1986 the club has organised the annual Krefeld offshore sailing city championship annually. In 1990 Günter Mackenstein became commodore after 33 years on the board; three club boats sailed to Beeskow in the former GDR. In 1991 two new youth boats were purchased; in 1992 a hydraulic trailer for land transport up to 15 tonnes was acquired. In 1993 the club celebrated its 60th anniversary with renovation of the clubhouse. In subsequent years the mooring facility with dolphins, access bridge, kitchen, office and rigging room were modernised. The youth section won numerous medals and repeatedly brought the youth travelling trophy to Krefeld; KSVg boats repeatedly achieved medal places in DSV cruising competitions. Hundreds of people from Krefeld owe their qualification as leisure captains to the club.
