Krefelder Segler Vereinigung 1933 e.V.
Krefelder Segler Vereinigung 1933 e.V. is the oldest and most traditional sailing club in Krefeld and the surrounding area and a member of the German Sailing Association and the North Rhine-Westphalia Sailing Association. The club is located at the turning basin of Krefeld commercial harbour on Latumer Straße 50 and offers pontoons, a clubhouse, a boat hall and summer and winter berths for boats up to 15 metres. Club-owned boats including Optimists and a Varianta are available for training; the youth section is active and has won medals in DSV cruising competitions. Regular licence courses (SBF inland and sea), regattas and the annual Krefeld city championship for offshore sailors have shaped club life since the founding on 21 May 1933.
History
In the mid-1920s the later founding members started sailing on the Rhine in self-built sailing canoes; in 1925 the first sailing dinghies were on the Rhine. On 21 May 1933 the Krefelder Segler-Vereinigung 33 e.V. was founded to remain independent of Marinejugend and Marine-SA. In 1934 the City of Krefeld built shelter and pontoons at the Rhine harbour in Uerdingen; boats first lay on buoys on the west side of the harbour. From 1935 to 1939 cruising and racing followed; in 1934 founding member Heinz Bayer took second place at German championships in Essen. In World War II pontoon, shelter and boats were completely destroyed. In 1949 the remaining members regrouped, built or bought sailing boats and constructed temporary pontoons and a hut. In 1956 the first sea voyages to the North and Baltic Seas began; in 1958 for the 25th anniversary the clubhouse was inaugurated and the club became a destination of the Rhine Week. In 1960 the youth cutter “Hermann Knopp” was christened; in 1963 a new self-built pontoon and anniversary regatta followed. In 1975 the club joined the Elfrather See water sports centre; in 1976 a larger wooden house was built there, and in 1977 the first cruising sailors’ meeting with a regatta on the IJsselmeer took place. In 1981 KSVg acquired land at the turning basin and began hall and slipway construction; in 1983 for the 50th anniversary the new facilities at the Krefeld Rhine harbour turning basin were inaugurated. Since 1986 KSVg has hosted the annual Krefeld city championship for offshore sailors. In 1990 Günter Mackenstein became commodore after 33 years on the board and a younger board was elected; three KSVg boats sailed to Beeskow in the former GDR. In 1992 a hydraulic trailer for boats up to 15 t was acquired; in 1993 the clubhouse was extended for the 60th anniversary. Between 1998 and 2008 the new pontoon with piles and the access bridge were planned and built. Today Krefeld’s oldest sailing club promotes sailing and motorboating with harbour, clubhouse, boat hall and active youth and licence training.
