KYK Kufsteiner Yachtklub
The Kufstein Yacht Club (KYK) is an Austrian sailing club based in Kufstein with club grounds on Lake Chiemsee in Kailbacher Bay. The club offers harbour facilities, a boat shed and club boats for hire, including Laser and Optimist, and is a licensed training centre of the Austrian Sailing Federation. Members of all ages meet regularly to sail, share experience and take part in season-opening and closing races as well as yardstick regattas. Since its foundation in 1963, community, training and traditional seasonal events have shaped club life on the Bavarian Sea.
History
The prehistory of the Kufstein Yacht Club goes back to 1959, when Ernst Bühl, then 13, first sailed on Lake Chiemsee with a friend in a paddle boat. From 1960 the “Four” – Ernst Bühl, Klaus Jung, Kurt Schönhofer and Wolf Peschl – helped at boat hire and builder Förg and acquired the retired boat “Fritz I”, restored with the help of Fritz Leitner. In 1961 they sailed intensively; in April 1962 the Four decided to found the Kufstein Yacht Club. After the Tyrolean state government approved the statutes, the founding meeting was held on 2 January 1963 and the club was established with 16 founding members. In the same year the first club boats were purchased, the first A certificates were passed and the club took part in regattas including the Tyrolean championships. In 2023 the club celebrated its 60th anniversary with a festivity and harbour basin blessing on 24 June at the club grounds in Kailbacher Bay. Today KYK runs its club grounds with harbour on Lake Chiemsee, hires out club boats and is a licensed training centre of the Austrian Sailing Federation.
