Kieler Yacht-Club e.V.
The Kieler Yacht-Club e.V. (KYC) is the sailing and watersports centre on Kiel Fjord and home port of Kiel Week. With around 1,500 members, the club founded in 1887 combines regatta sailing, cruising, training and active club life for all generations. Locations include the historic clubhouse on Kiellinie, the youth clubhouse in Strande with junior and racing groups, plus boatyard and berths. The programme ranges from Optimist and ILCA training through sailing school and training group to performance team and German Sailing League. The KYC organises internationally significant regattas such as YES, MaiOR and Kiel Week and promotes young talent up to Olympic classes.
History
The Kieler Yacht-Club was founded in 1887 as the Imperial Yacht Club and developed into one of Germany's most traditional sailing clubs. The first Kiel Week took place as early as 1892 and is now among the world's most important sailing events. During the Nazi era the club was dissolved and re-established in 1947 as Kieler Yacht-Club e.V. after the Second World War. In 1972 Kiel hosted the Olympic sailing competitions; the Schilksee Olympic Centre has shaped regatta sport in the region ever since. In 1987 the club celebrated its centenary. The clubhouse at Kiellinie 70 was built in 1926 and rebuilt after wartime destruction; the youth clubhouse in Strande opened in 1991. Today the KYC unites more than 1,500 members, international regatta formats from YES and MaiOR to Kiel Week, a strong junior and racing group, sailing school, training group, boatyard, berths and a broad course programme from SBF See to SKS.
