Koninklijke Yacht Club Nieuwpoort
The Koninklijke Yacht Club Nieuwpoort (KYCN) is a traditional Belgian yacht club on the North Sea coast in Nieuwpoort, situated on starboard when entering the harbour channel on the Krommehoek peninsula. The club operates a modern marina with over 400 berths for sail and motor boats, water and electricity, renovated sanitary facilities, laundry, free Wi-Fi, travel lift and the club restaurant d'Oude Jachthaven. The KYCN Sailing Academy offers youth and adult training on Laser Vago and J/80 as well as theory courses including the stuurbrevet; the H-Cup, regattas and club activities for families and athletes are also central. Founded in 1932, Blue Flag recognised since 2003 and host of European and world championships, the club is a fixture of Belgian sailing.
History
The Koninklijke Yacht Club Nieuwpoort (KYCN) was founded in 1932 and is one of Belgium's oldest yacht clubs. In 1938 the first clubhouse was built along the IJzer; that building was later donated to the Nieuwpoort sea scouts. In 1971 Commodore Paul Orban had a new clubhouse built on the Krommehoek, where the Vierboete once marked the safe harbour – beginning the KYCN story on the peninsula. Since 2006 Baudouin Meyhui has led the board as Commodore, driving upgrades focused on sustainability and ecological responsibility. Since 2003 KYCN has been recognised as a Blue Flag marina and obtained the certificate again in 2026. The club stands for youth, family and sport and has hosted Belgian, European and world championships and co-founded the North Sea Championship. Social engagement runs through Zachte Kracht VZW and Sail in Solidarity with sailing trips for disadvantaged young people and to build confidence. Today the marina offers more than 400 berths and holds a 5 Anchors Club distinction.
