Skanderborg Junior Sejlklub

Skanderborg Junior Sejlklub (SJS) is a youth sailing club at scenic Vestermølle on Lake Skanderborg in Denmark, open to children and young people up to 25 years of age. The club offers training for dinghy sailors from about eight years old in Optimist and Europe, with the option to rent a club dinghy or sail your own boat. Facilities include changing rooms, toilets and dinghy berths built and maintained by volunteers. Experienced coaches who are passionate sailors themselves support beginners and advanced sailors on the water; members take part in training, regattas and club events. Since its founding in 1981, community spirit and the club magazine KoØjet have shaped club life by the lake.

History

Skanderborg Junior Sejlklub was founded in 1981 with the aim of giving children and young people up to 25 the joy of sailing on Lake Skanderborg. From the start the club has been based at scenic Vestermølle, where volunteers have built and improved the facilities over the years. Today there are changing rooms, toilets and dinghy places — all created by people devoted to sailing and community. Alongside the club’s history, the magazine KoØjet began in 1981, named after the seafaring expression for keeping a watchful eye on the horizon. Early handwritten newsletters were handed out at Vestermølle; in the 1980s KoØjet was printed and sent to all members, in the 2000s it was digitised and emailed, and today it is published as a PDF on the website. Content has always covered sailing, regattas, stories from the lake, important dates and the fellowship that binds SJS together across decades. Vestermølle on Lake Skanderborg is an idyllic setting for dinghy sailing; the club also recalls the local legend that King Christian IV learned seamanship here as a child. Today SJS is run entirely by volunteers and offers training, regattas, club events and the use of club rooms at Vestermølle.
