Hannoverscher Yacht-Club e.V.
Hannoverscher Yacht-Club e.V. (HYC) is a traditional sailing club with roots dating back to 1906 on Lake Steinhude and on the Maschsee in Hanover. At the Steinhude site with 78 berths and in-house catering, and in Hanover with 34 berths on 78 hectares of water, the club combines regatta sailing, cruising and active youth work under one roof. The infrastructure includes clubhouses, pontoons and training facilities; regular regattas and training events such as FD training weekends shape the sporting programme. Club members compete successfully in classes including Flying Dutchman, Optimist, Conger and Pirat – most recently with the FD world title in 2025. HYC stands for sporting excellence, community and intergenerational sailing on two bodies of water in the Hanover region.
History
Hannoverscher Yacht-Club looks back on more than a hundred years of history that began with the founding of a sailing club in 1906. At that time, dedicated water sports enthusiasts joined forces to promote sailing on Lake Steinhude. With just one cabin boat and a small group of like-minded people, a club emerged that over time developed into a fixture in German sailing. From the outset, regatta sport played a central role. Even in the early years, members organised regattas and events that strengthened cohesion and consolidated the club's sporting level. Over the decades, the club celebrated numerous successes at regional, national and international level. Particularly in dinghy and keelboat classes, club members regularly won championship titles and podium places at major regattas. Alongside sporting success, the development of infrastructure was also formative. The steady expansion and modernisation of clubhouses, pontoons and training facilities created ideal conditions for both recreational and competitive sport. A special focus was always on promoting youth, who in junior groups developed not only sailing skills but also team spirit and a sense of responsibility. Club life always reflected a mix of tradition and progress. Through changes in the board and their visionary direction, the club was able to modernise its offerings and adapt to social change without losing its roots. Legendary members such as Kurt Prenzler shaped the FD class over decades and promoted youth as youth officer. In April 2025, HYC sailors Kilian König and Johannes Brack were crowned world champions in the Flying Dutchman class in Puerto Sherry. Today, Hannoverscher Yacht-Club stands for sporting excellence, community and continuity. It unites experienced sailors with enthusiastic juniors and is living proof of how a club can preserve its identity across generations while continuing to grow.
