Grömitzer Segel-Club e.V.
Grömitzer Segel-Club e.V. (GSC) is a family-friendly sailing club in the heart of the Bay of Lübeck with more than 60 years of history and around 300 members. At pontoon 3 in Grömitz yacht harbour, club boats lie in berths between ten and twelve metres; the modern clubhouse with panoramic balcony, barbecue terrace, large club room with bar, dedicated youth room and well-equipped sanitary facilities is the centre of club life. Sailing ranges from the youth fleet with Optimist, 29er, 420er and ILCA to offshore keel yachts for cruising, club regattas and international events. Juniors train every Saturday from 11 a.m. during the season in cooperation with Wassersport Grömitz; the GSC organises its own series such as GSC4Sailors and the OneSails Grömitzer DoubleHand and has been a driving force behind the marina since the 1960s as well as host of numerous European and world championships.
History
Grömitzer Segel-Club e.V. was founded on 26 June 1964 at the Hotel Miramar by young sailors from upper and lower Grömitz who first sailed on fishing boats and early leisure dinghies such as Hans-Werner Schütz's gaff-rigged O-Jolle. Founding chairman Hans Hüning, a building contractor, played a key role in creating the marina: the club presented the municipality with a cheque for 120,000 marks for pontoon 3, and on 10 September 1965 the council resolved to build a marina modelled on Kiel. Construction of the north-east mole and first pontoons began in March 1966; the first section was inaugurated on 14 August 1966 with a club regatta. The clubhouse at pontoon 3 was completed on 18 September 1982; the panoramic balcony was added in 2005, followed by the barbecue terrace, lounge with bar and major refurbishment of the sanitary facilities. From 1970 to 2006 the GSC hosted the international Grömitzer Woche 37 times, including world championships for X-99 (2005), 505 (1984), A-Cat (1991), Finn Gold Cup (1981), Yngling Europeans (1996) and repeated J/24 and International 14 German Opens. Since 1992 the club has run the Ostsee Cup for offshore yachts; own formats include GSC4Sailors and the OneSails Grömitzer DoubleHand. After membership fell to around 105 by 2010, the club focused on families and youth and now has about 300 members again. Since 2021 the Albin Express "Grömitz Express" has been at pontoon 3 for youth training; the GSC runs a club app and has equipped the clubhouse with photovoltaics and smart heating for energy autonomy. Martin Brasch has been first chairman since 2020.
