Segelabteilung des FC Dechsendorf e.V.
The sailing department of FC Dechsendorf e.V. (SCGr) is an established sailing club on Lake Dechsendorf in northwest Erlangen with around 210 members aged 5 to 90. The club grounds with sailing clubhouse are situated between the FC Dechsendorf club house and the lake, framed by two football pitches. The club has around 25 club boats that members can use free of charge when they are not needed for training, and has offered sailing and motorboat courses since its founding in 1965. Its boating education has been repeatedly honoured by the German Sailing Association. In summer there are sailing afternoons, sailing holidays, Optimist courses for children and the Cevapcici Regatta; club life also includes club festivals and the winter solstice bonfire.
History
More than 60 years ago, a handful of sailors founded the sailing interest group on Lake Dechsendorf (officially Großer Bischofsweiher), also known as Lago di Dechsi or Dechser. The existing Nuremberg club, from which Segelgemeinschaft Erlangen later emerged, no longer accepted members, and the city of Erlangen at the time did not approve a second sailing club on the lake for fear of too many sailboats. The founders therefore joined FC Großdechsendorf e.V. as an independent sailing department under the name SCGr; one year later they joined the German Sailing Association. Since the founding in 1965, when the club had to join FC Dechsendorf due to lack of space at the lake, the department has run sailing and motorboat courses and has been repeatedly honoured by the German Sailing Association for good training. Despite recurring concerns about water levels at the lake, membership has been expanded to around 210 and kept largely stable. Today two sailing clubs and a surf club are established on the 40-hectare lake; SCGr is somewhat hidden behind the sports ground next to Dechsendorf primary school at Campingstr. 38. In summer the club holds joint sailing afternoons, sailing holidays and a club festival; some members organise cruising trips or go on regular private voyages. At the end of the year there is the winter solstice bonfire where everyone meets to spin yarns and plan trips for the next year. Mostly on the first Saturday of the month, members meet to repair boats and maintain the facilities.
