Faaborg Sejlklub
Faaborg Sejlklub is a long-established Danish sailing club on one of the finest waters in the Nordic region, in the charming harbour town of Faaborg on Funen. The club serves as a family-friendly activity centre and a hub for Danish sailing elite, offering everything from first-time sailing to competitive racing. Facilities include a clubhouse, pontoon, mast crane, mast storage, slipway and organised berths for dinghies and keelboats. Youth sailing focuses on Optimist, ILCA and 29er, alongside the Sejlerskolen sailing school, KrabbeKlubben for children aged 5 to 8, Wednesday racing, the Tuco Cup distance regatta and participation in the Sejlsportsliga. Adults can book club boats such as L23 and CB66 online, while the 60+ group meets weekly for sailing trips and social gatherings.
History
At the start of the 20th century sailing was already widespread in Faaborg, with many cutters in the harbour town, including boats owned by well-known artists such as Tom Petersen, Peter Hansen and Bernhard Kellermann. In 1904 the Royal Danish Yacht Club held a major regatta with seven starts in Faaborg. The Danish Sailing Association was founded in Faaborg in 1913, and on 24 January 1914 a group of keen sailors founded Faaborg Sejlklub. The first board under chairman Birkedommer H. H. Hvass included vice-chairman Dr Rosenberg, treasurer teacher I. Laursen, and members fabrikant M. Jørgensen and konditor Gottwald. Club funds started at 20 kr. contributed by Rosenberg; annual fees were 4 kr. for active and 2 kr. for passive members. The club burgee was Faaborg's coat of arms in red on white; rules followed Svendborg Sund Sejlklub and Alfred Benzon's rating rules applied. The first season programme included flag raising on 3 May, local and distance races, an excursion to Søby on 21 June and flag lowering on 4 October. Today at Lille Strand 6 the club is a centre for families, club sailors and elite competitors with a strong youth section, sailing school, regatta traditions such as the Tuco Cup and national Sejlsportsliga participation.
