Clube do Mar de Coimbra
Clube do Mar de Coimbra is a federated sailing club founded in 1997, with its headquarters at Centro Náutico Parque Verde in Coimbra and an activity centre at the Marina in Figueira da Foz. The club runs a sailing school certified by the Federação Portuguesa de Vela and promotes Optimist, Laser and other dinghy and cruising classes on the Mondego river and the Atlantic coast. Regular training takes place in Coimbra and Figueira da Foz, including Optimist courses for beginners and a Laser group that sails on Sundays at the coast. The programme covers regattas, sports holidays at Christmas, Carnival, Easter and summer, and social events for all ages. The club organises regional and national events such as the Mini-Cruzeiros Championship and the 14th Troféu de Vela de Cruzeiro, combining competitive sailing with broad youth development in the Coimbra region.
History
Clube do Mar de Coimbra was founded in 1997 from a passion for sailing and watersports and, with support from the Fundação dos Oceanos, became a reference association in Portuguese sailing. In 2006 the club reinvented itself, focusing its activities on teaching and competitive sailing in the Coimbra region. It promotes dinghy sailing with Optimist for initiation and competition and Laser, as well as cruising. The club is federated and competes in regional and national championships and international events in the classes it practices. Its certified Escola de Vela offers quality training for all ages and levels in Coimbra and at the Centro de Vela da Figueira da Foz in the Marina. In recent years the Optimist team returned to official competitions, and the sailing school received the Gold Certificate from the Federação Portuguesa de Vela for the 2025/2026 season. The club organises its own regatta series such as the Mini-Cruzeiros Championship and the Troféu de Vela de Cruzeiro in the Baía Oceânica da Figueira da Foz. Members such as Dénis Neves, former President of the Board and currently part of the social bodies, also link the club internationally through successes in the J22 class. After storm damage from Kristin in 2026, the club is working to restore its facilities in Figueira da Foz and Coimbra to continue training and school activities.
