Real Club El Candado
Real Club El Candado is a long-established multi-sport club in Málaga on the Costa del Sol, with three nearby centres: a historic marina and sailing school, a 9-hole golf course, and a social sports complex with padel, tennis, fitness and swimming pools. On the Mediterranean, the nautical section offers 280 berths, a boatyard, fuel station, Candado Beach, and courses in Optimist, Laser and cruiser sailing as well as rowing and windsurfing. The club has organised the Mar de Alborán regatta for more than 40 years, along with the Vuelta Costa del Sol and numerous Optimist and cruiser regattas. Children and adults benefit from year-round sailing schools, summer camps and active youth development through the Senda Azul programme. Its philosophy «Crece con el deporte» combines family values, competition and environmental responsibility at one of Andalusia's leading sports venues.
History
In the early 1960s a group of Málaga entrepreneurs and developers created the Urbanización El Candado, named after the original estate. To attract future residents they established Club El Candado de Tenis, a social club of a standard unknown in Málaga at the time. Sporting ambition soon grew further with a golf course and later a marina built from two small breakwaters at Playa de Almellones. Since then the club has hosted countless social and sporting events and celebrated many athletic achievements. Over more than 50 years Real Club El Candado has staged over 5,000 competitions. The Regata Mar de Alborán Memorial Capitán de Navío Juan Luis Cervera Govantes, with more than 40 editions and over 1,000 participants in its history, is a fixture on the Andalusian offshore cruiser calendar. In 1994 the regatta received the honorary presidency of King Juan Carlos I, now held by the Spanish Navy. The Cervezas San Miguel tennis tournament has run for more than 20 editions with winners including Pablo Arraya and Juan Luis «Tati» Rascón. Golf Week has been held for over 30 editions, initiated by honorary member Pedro Sánchez Marín. The club has hosted national and international events including the 2012 Spanish 420 Championship, the 2007 Spanish Padel Championship and the 2017 Junior Padel World Championship. Through the Otiñano Trophy for human values in sport it honours figures such as Vicente del Bosque, Sergio Scariolo and Carolina Navarro. Today Real Club El Candado unites three sites – racquet sports with gym and pools, golf and nautical – under the motto «Crece con el deporte».
