Catclub Zeeland

Catclub Zeeland is a Dutch catamaran club with two locations on the Veerse Meer and the North Sea at Vrouwenpolder – described on its own website as unique in the Netherlands. At recreation site De Piet near Wolphaartsdijk there are more than 80 moorings, and at the sea station around 30 berths on the beach at Vrouwenpolder. Both sites have a clubhouse with sail storage, changing rooms, a basic kitchen, fridge and barbecue facilities. The club runs club races such as the Ronde Veerse Meer, KeesRace, Duvel Race and, since 2009, the annual Dutch Dragoon Cup, plus cruising events, clinics and open days. Sailing lessons by members, shared club boats and a youth programme from age 12 complete the offering for beginners and racing sailors alike.

History

Catclub Zeeland's roots go back to the mid-1980s when Ad van Dalen organised open-catamaran races from Camping De Paardekreek in Kortgene, using an old caravan as the club office. The club was founded in 1988 in canteen De Bagge; by November 1988, 40 catamarans were already sailing under the club name. Membership grew from 40 to 70 in 1989 and the first club magazine appeared. In 1991 the club gained its first beach site in Vrouwenpolder; the Banana Beach Trophy was first sailed in 1992. The first beach clubhouse was built in 1993 and sea moorings reached 30. After contract disputes and storm damage in 1999, a former chip shop became the new sea clubhouse. On the Veerse Meer, a new clubhouse at De Piet was built in 2000 and officially opened in 2001; the lake contract runs until 2052. Youth sailing with Hobie Dragoons started in 2007 and the Dutch Dragoon Cup in 2009. A youth clubhouse followed in 2011 and a new North Sea building in 2013; the 25th anniversary was celebrated with 80 people. Today the club combines leisure sailing, competitive racing on sea and lake, and an active community with work days and social events.
