Cascaruda Yacht Club
Cascaruda Yacht Club Graz is a non-profit offshore yacht club founded in 1996 in Styria, Austria, with the motto "Sailing with family and friends!". As a member of the Austrian and Styrian sailing federations, the club combines cruising on the open sea, regatta participation from the Austrian Sailing League to international offshore regattas on the Mediterranean, and the traditional CYC Dinghy Championship on Lake Waldschach. The club is an Austrian Sailing Federation certified training centre for sailing licences FB1 to FB4; learning materials are provided at cost price. Monthly club evenings at Gasthaus Wagner in Graz, thorough skipper training, joint cruises and an experienced regatta team shape club life for beginners and experienced sailors alike.
History
The history of Cascaruda Yacht Club began in the second half of 1995, when sailing enthusiasts such as Michael Neubauer, Ludwig Riedler, Herbert Haas and Uli Egger met regularly to talk about sailing, plan cruises and exchange experiences. From the growing regulars' table grew the wish for an official club framework. On 11 March 1996 the founding meeting took place at Forellenhof in Graz-Eggenberg; the club started with 18 members and grew to 48 by the end of the year. On 8 July 1996 the association was registered with the authorities and officially recognised by decision of 17 July 1996. The motto "Sailing with family and friends" was established from the outset. As early as October 1996 the first training course for sailing licence FB2 began, supplemented by radio and GPS courses; training became a fixed part of club life. Although the CYC was conceived as an offshore club, it also established dinghy sailing early on: the first Forest Chess Regatta was held in 1997, youth training in inland waters started in 2003 and the CYC Dinghy Championship was launched. Youth weeks were discontinued in 2010 due to lack of interest, but the dinghy championship on Lake Waldschach remained one of the most popular events. Since 1998 the club has organised the autumn regatta on its own, alternating with the Revival Race. Since its founding the club has supported the Revival Race with equipment and logistics and has taken part in numerous offshore regattas such as Round Palagruza, Kornati Cup, S-Cup, Adria Cup and Barcolana. In 2016 inland sailing reached a peak with three teams in the first Styrian Sailing Regional League. Over the years the club moved from Forellenhof via Reininghausstüberl to Gasthaus Wagner in Wachtelgasse, where monthly club evenings on the first Monday still take place today. In 1999 information exchange via the internet began; today the CYC maintains a website and a Facebook account. Cascaruda Yacht Club is a member of the Austrian Sailing Federation and celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2016 with a trip to Grado.
