Chiemsee Yacht Club e.V.
Founded in 1913, Chiemsee Yacht Club e.V. in Prien am Chiemsee is one of Bavaria's oldest and largest sailing clubs with around 900 members. On the western shore of Lake Chiemsee, the non-profit club offers approximately 28,000 m² of grounds with pontoons, a boatyard, winter storage hall, restaurant and a year-round office. High-profile regattas and championships across many classes are complemented by dedicated youth work, grassroots sailing and a strong club community. Juniors train in classes such as Optimist, 29er, 420er and ILCA; club boats including Pirat, Star, Kielzugvogel and Dyas are available for hire. For more than 110 years, the CYC has combined sailing tradition with modern regatta sport and youth development on Lake Chiemsee.
History
Chiemsee Yacht Club was founded on 24 March 1913 in Prien am Chiemsee; the first president was Dr Herbert Baer. A first regatta off Fraueninsel was held in the founding year. After the First World War, club life resumed from 1920; Dr Fritz Stickler became president in 1926 and the club joined the German Sailing Association in 1927. In 1929 it merged with Chiemsee-Club Prien under president A.E. Goedicke. The 20 sqm racing dinghy became the class boat in the 1930s; the first Plätte "Chiemo" was built for the CYC in 1935. After the Second World War the club was reconstituted in 1946 at Schlosshotel Herrenchiemsee with Stickler as president again. The first "Blue Band of Lake Chiemsee" was sailed for in 1949. Membership and fleet grew strongly in the 1950s; the first Flying Dutchmen arrived in 1953 and Rudolf Ott became president. Star boats joined in 1954; the FD European Championship was held at the CYC in 1957. Three club Pirat boats were acquired in 1958, two of which remain in service. Star and Dragon fleets expanded in the 1960s; the CYC celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1963. The Huber boatyard was purchased in 1965, laying the foundation for today's site. Erwin Ludescher presided from 1969 and shaped the club for over two decades. In 1970 the CYC bought the clubhouse, water hall, winter storage, berth house and pontoons while Optimist youth work began successfully. Soling and Laser fleets emerged in the 1970s and the CYC youth week established itself with over 100 participants. The club grounds reached about 20,000 m² by 1987; the 75th anniversary was celebrated in 1988. Today the club has around 900 members including about 200 young sailors up to age 26 and hosts numerous national and international regattas on Lake Chiemsee.
