History

Burger Segler Vereinigung was founded on 11 May 1924 by nineteen sailors from Burgstaaken. Early years saw small mast-rigged rowing boats and first races on 28 June 1925 between the harbour mole and the former rescue house on the Tiefe. Until World War II the fleet grew and the first proper dinghies sailed under the blue-white-red burgee of the BSV. Club sailing paused during the war until 10 December 1949, when Erich von Normann with merchants Hiss and Kölln revived the association. First berths were created in Burgstaaken at the outer eastern harbour mole; members built a wooden clubhouse inaugurated on 21 May 1960. With the Burgtiefe marina project the BSV concentrated berths at the round pier and later moved to pier V, where its own clubhouse was opened on 12 September 1980. Community life flourished there; after the fall of the Wall a quieter period followed before many new members returned in later years. At the end of 2015 the club counted 278 members, including 55 juniors. Core traditions include Friday evening races with regularly 10 to 15 boats, the Fehmarn Round Regatta in May, the autumn regatta, fitting-out and laying-up, ladies' race, summer festival and curry-rice dinner. On 11 May 2024 the BSV celebrated its centenary at the Burgtiefe clubhouse with guests from the DSV, the state sailing federation and the town of Fehmarn.
