History

According to the club, Brändö Seglare has had around 90 years to grow into one of Finland’s cosiest sailing clubs. The home harbour facilities are on the island Sälen in southern Brändö in eastern Helsinki; buildings and fixed quays have been expanded over the years with breakwaters, floating pontoons and slipways to meet growing demand. The harbour is run in cooperation with the City of Helsinki’s Sports and Outdoor Recreation Department and has berths for about 60 keelboats and motorboats plus around 30 dinghies ashore, plus a fixed crane of up to one tonne. Since the 1970s the BS Classic Regatta in late August has been a tradition on Kronbergsfjärden. The club organises open and internal races, including junior and J/70 events and 29er races, and in recent years has hosted Optimist qualification events for Nordic, European and World Championships. BS also co-organises major regattas with Helsinki Sail Racing Management (HSRM) and takes part in junior cooperation such as the East Side Sailing Team in eastern Helsinki. Today the club has around 800 members, about 200 of them juniors, and maintains a club fleet of dinghies, RIBs, J/70s and an SJ10 motorboat for members without their own boat.
