Zeilvereniging De Balgerij

History

Zeilvereniging De Balgerij was founded in 1986 and was then called Aan de Balgerij, named after the corresponding part of the Kagerplassen. Since 2013 the club has been based on the island of Koudenhoorn in Warmond. For many years the club has sailed with eight Valk boats; two of them were due for replacement. A committee compared and tested alternatives, including the classic Valk and the Randmeer, and chose the Falcon from Friesland for ease of sailing, safety, manoeuvrability and wind response. Because the Falcon is a new design with no second-hand boats available, financing was challenging; with strong member enthusiasm and support from the Schipholfonds, two new Falcons were purchased. On 11 May 2025 the two open sailboats were christened and put into service at the Groote Sloot in Warmond; honorary member Marijke Burgel christened one of the new Falcons. Chair Astrid Hennekam stressed at the christening that the club wants to remain attractive for young and old; the Falcons fit this ambition with their innovative design and sporting character. The following year the club celebrates its 40th anniversary. Members can sail on the Kaag without owning a boat, take part in instruction and events, and meet in the clubhouse De Windroos. There is a waiting list; currently about a year passes between application and the invitation to an intro test, with membership expected at the earliest from 2027.
