Koninklijke Brugse Zeil- & Yacht Club
The Bruges Sailing and Yacht Club (BZYC) is a recognised sailing club and sailing school with two locations in Belgium: the Bruges base on the Boudewijn Canal in the port area and the Zeebrugge base with a Golden Anchor marina. The club operates a large fleet of training boats including Optimists, ILCA dinghies, Laser Bahia and other course boats, plus two Beneteau First 7.5 yachts for leisure and introductory sailing. The programme covers youth and adult courses, six club regattas per season, G-sailing for people with disabilities, Cadet sailing and the traditional Meitrip since 1988. With more than 50 years of training experience and WWSV-certified instructors, the club offers sailing for beginners, advanced sailors and yacht cruisers between Bruges and the Belgian coast.
History
The Bruges Sailing and Yacht Club has existed for many years and is documented in photographs from 1967. According to its statutes, the club turned 50 on 10 December, when the board founded the current non-profit association under the supervision of Notary Vrielynck. A reception for all members and former members was held on 22 October 2022 at Bruges town hall, in the presence of the mayor and governor. Since then the club has continued to develop. In Bruges, the clubhouse and base are located on the Boudewijn Canal in the port area, where regattas, introductory courses for youth and adults and free youth sailing days are organised throughout the sailing season. BZYC has more than 50 years of experience in sailing instruction. On 3 September 2016 the marina and clubhouse in Zeebrugge were officially opened with more than 300 guests present, transforming the small Bruges sailing club into a major yacht harbour on the Belgian coast with Golden Anchor certification. Since 1988 the club has organised the traditional Meitrip; the first edition in 1988 sailed from Ostend via Ramsgate to Veere (130 nautical miles, 30 April to 2 May). The logbook records many member voyages including the IJsberentocht and trips from Zeebrugge to Stockholm. The club is affiliated as a recognised sailing school with WWSV and as a sustainable G-sports club.
