Bodensee-Yacht-Club Überlingen e.V.

Bodensee-Yacht-Club Überlingen (BYCÜ) is one of the oldest sailing clubs on Lake Constance and the oldest sailing sports club in Baden-Württemberg, with around 700 members and about 80 active juniors. On the north-western shore of Lake Überlingen, the non-profit club offers a clubhouse, marina with guest berths, slipway and crane facilities, and dinghy and Optimist storage. In competitive and recreational sailing, members race classes including Optimist, ILCA, 420er, 470er, J/70, H-Boot, Dragon and Star; teams compete in the German Sailing Bundesliga and the German Junior Sailing League. A well-developed youth section provides weekly training, Optimist camps and squad development. Traditional regattas such as the Überlingen autumn regattas and the Dragon trophy, along with club events from opening-of-season sailing to the club festival, shape life at this Lake Constance club.

History

Überlinger Segel-Club was founded in 1909 and is one of the three oldest sailing clubs on Lake Constance; in 2019 BYCÜ celebrated 110 years of tradition. In 1911 the special-class yacht Sonderling was commissioned, the club joined the German Sailing Association and became a founding member of the Lake Constance Sailing Association. In 1912 Überlinger Segel-Club merged with Yacht-Club Konstanz to form Großherzoglich Badischer Yacht-Club. After a boatyard fire in 1913, the 8m R-yacht Bodan (today Bayern II) became flagship and a clubhouse at Schützengraben was inaugurated. A youth section was founded in 1919; in 1922 the club was renamed Badischer Yacht-Club Überlingen, and in 1924 sailing pioneer Manfred Curry raced at the club. The present harbour basin 1 was built in 1935; in 1936 a new clubhouse and the 75 sqm national cruiser Bodan II became flagship. From 1938 Star boats established themselves in Überlingen, making BYCÜ a stronghold of the class. Today Bodensee-Yacht-Club Überlingen is the largest yacht club in Überlingen with about 700 members and 80 active juniors on the north-western Überlinger See. The volunteer board promotes sailing, organises regattas and social events, develops youth sailing and maintains harbour, clubhouse and club boats. With J/70 teams in the German Sailing Bundesliga, the Junior Sailing League and international regattas from Optimist to 470er, the club ranks among the region's top performers. In the 2020s Klaus Sacher was elected president, the youth section received the Youth Sailing Award, and successes were achieved at world and European championships and at the Rund Um on Lake Constance.
