Akademischer SegelVerein Warnemünde e.V.

Akademischer SegelVerein Warnemünde e.V. (ASVW) is a performance-oriented sailing club at Yachthafen Mittelmole in Rostock-Warnemünde on the Baltic Sea. The club maintains its own J/70 yachts for the German Sailing Bundesliga as well as Laser and 470 dinghies for junior and dinghy sailing, and also operates the club yacht SY Soltur. Since 2014 ASVW has competed in the Sailing Bundesliga and annually organises the Midsummer Cup and the offshore race Sail 360 from Warnemünde to Oslo. The youth section targets ambitious racing sailors and offers training, class regattas and a pathway into the junior league. Rooted in the tradition of the Warnemünde university sports community, the club continues to promote sporting sailing for students and young sailors on one of Germany’s finest Baltic sailing grounds.

History

Akademischer SegelVerein Warnemünde e.V. traces its roots to the university sports community (HSG) of the Warnemünde/Wustrow maritime engineering college, later part of the University of Rostock and Wismar University of Applied Sciences. In 1990 the club took over two seagoing 11-metre yachts and several dinghies from this predecessor; those yachts, which had already raced successfully for two decades, formed the heart of the club. The yacht Mutafo remained the club boat until 2017 and was later sold to its regular crew after its 40th anniversary in 2014. To strengthen student and youth work, the club sold the one-tonner Nadir in 2001 and on 24 March 2002 christened the new X-79 Campus XW. In 2012 the Yngling Yoda joined the youth fleet; in 2013 the one-off Flyer replaced Campus XW. In 2018 ASVW sold the Yngling and Flyer to focus on the J/70 Charlotte as a training yacht for the Sailing Bundesliga; two Lasers remain available. Since 2014 the ASVW team has raced in the Sailing Bundesliga and reached the first division in 2018. Long-standing spring and autumn triangle races were replaced by the Midsummer Cup around the summer solstice and the Gedser Cup on the last August weekend; the latter is being succeeded by Sail 360 (Late Summer Cup) from Warnemünde to Oslo. Together with Warnemünder Segelclub, ASVW runs the Warnemünde Wednesday Regatta and supports the international Warnemünder Woche. Club yacht SY Soltur serves among other roles as a league start boat and for cruising in the Stralsund–Hiddensee area.
