Akademischer Segel-Verein Hamburg e. V.

Akademischer Segel-Verein Hamburg e. V. (ASV) is a sailing club founded in 1954 by students and is one of the younger Hamburg clubs on the Alster. As one of the few clubs covering all three sailing areas Alster, Elbe and sea, ASV maintains a club-owned fleet of 16 dinghies and four seagoing sailing yachts. Members may use the Alster boats without extra charges and meet for club sailing at the Bobby Reich jetty as well as for the club evening at RG Hansa. Training, youth development and racing shape the programme – from SBF inland courses and JASV training to the 24-hour regatta and the Senatspreis on the Elbe. Today the club has around 500 members of all ages and combines student tradition with ambitious racing and offshore sailing.

History

Akademischer Segel-Verein Hamburg e. V. was founded in 1954 by students and is one of the younger Hamburg sailing clubs. It began with two wooden Pirate dinghies and sailing-enthusiastic students on the Alster. Through long-standing member commitment, friendships and many cruises, ASV grew into the third-largest sailing club on the Alster and one of the few covering Alster, Elbe and sea. The club-owned fleet now comprises 16 dinghies on the Alster and four seagoing yachts named Röde Orm, Toke, Gabelbart and Oddny after Frans Gunnar Bengtsson’s book. Over 50 years ago the Skippers’ Assembly (SKV) was formed from within ASV to retain older, experienced sailors. The youth section (JASV) and the Student Sailing Club at the University of Hamburg (SSV) also became core parts of club life. Since 2004 ASV has organised the 24-hour Alster regatta; together with Blankeneser Segel-Club it has run the Senatspreis on the Elbe since 1980. From 2018 youth training focused on O'pen Skiffs; since 2020 Team Ylva has raced the Helga Cup. After a 2022–2024 trial phase the club has owned the J/70 YLVA since the 2025 season. Today ASV has about 500 members of all ages and offers a year-round programme from New Year reception and Easter cruise to club sailing, regattas and the foundation festival.
