History

On 7 August 1961 the Altonaer Segel-Club was founded at the inn „Zum Bäcker“ in Oevelgönne. The founding minutes record that shared weekend and holiday trips had brought the group together as a larger sailing comradeship; many knew each other from school and apprenticeship days, and almost all boats were based on the Oevelgönne roadstead. Heinz Schulz was elected first chairman unanimously. Other founding members were Hermann Böhmer, Günther Lehmbecker, Hans Joachimsen, Jürgen Schiller, Rolf Dreyer and Hans Kähler. In December 1962 the ASC was entered in the Hamburg association register. The young club grew quickly: by January 1965 it already had 100 members. In 1966 the ASC took over Max and Herbert Lührs' boat storage and gained its first own pontoon facility where the Strandperle stands today; there was no clubhouse yet, so members met in local pubs. In 1970 ASC and BSC jointly hosted the VII European Championship of the international 12 sqm Sharpie class on the Mühlenberger Loch. In 1972 the container ship „Tokio Bay“ badly damaged the pontoons; harbour authorities proposed a move to Finkenwerder's Neßkanal. The move took place in 1973: the ASC received permission for nearly 100 berths and bought the former customs cutter „Groden“ as a floating clubhouse. In 1976 a storm surge largely spared the site; the youth section grew, the youth cutter „Kurt Lange“ was bought from SVWS and renamed „Rasmus“, and a winter storage yard was added. From 1978 the club magazine „Verklicker“ appeared. In 1979 the club celebrated its 18th birthday and the youth cutter made its first major Baltic cruise. In 1980 the joint fitting-out with BSC drew 71 boats in 13 groups. In 1981 „Rasmus“ was chartered to a training workshop for lack of crew. In 1982 the ASC Opti regatta in the Köhlfleet became a ranking and qualifying event for the German junior championships with 41 Optimists from 20 clubs. In 1983 piles were driven for the Groden; the cutter raced at Kiel Week. In 1984 an active cutter crew raced Kiel Week, cruised the Baltic and sailed the Blue Ribbon; members were expelled for unpaid dues for the first time. In 1985 ice pressure threatened the piles and ice was broken with a barge. In 1986 the club celebrated its 25th anniversary with around 80 boats at the anniversary regatta. In 1989 the club moved again a few hundred metres to the Rüschkanal. In 1991, for the 30th anniversary, the first winter storage hall (1,200 m²) was inaugurated. In 1992 and 1993 the cutter sailed to Copenhagen and around Funen and regularly attended Kiel Week. In 1996 the club marked 35 years. In 2000 a J/24 was added for older juniors. In 2001 the hall was moved and enlarged because Airbus extended its runway. In 2003 a small playground was built. A 2004 break-in led to a new key system. In 2006 pontoons were largely renewed with plastic fingers; the Opti group grew and first trained in Neustadt-Glewe. In 2007 three new Optis were bought and beginners and advanced groups trained separately; a junior licence exam returned. In 2008 the Groden was thoroughly refurbished with reserves, a Hamburg Sports Federation grant and a member levy, then reopened in autumn. Since 2009 the ASC has had its own website. In 2010 an extraordinary general meeting voted to keep the repair-needy Rasmus. In 2011 the ASC celebrated its 50th birthday and honoured long-standing members. Today the club is based at Rüschweg 24 in Hamburg-Finkenwerder and continues youth sailing, guest berths and the traditional anniversary regatta.
