ASACC – Austrian Sailing And Cruising Club

ASACC – Austrian Sailing And Cruising Club is an officially registered sailing club in the Austrian association register, based in Weiz in Styria. The club offers sailing and water sports enthusiasts a shared platform for their hobby on the water as well as for training and exchanging information. Together with Dobro Sail Academy and AYA-Segeln, it provides high-quality training for inland and offshore sailing, including skipper training, ISAF safety training and regatta training. Besides joint cruises and offshore regattas in the Adriatic, inspiring children to sail is a key focus. Founded in 2015, the club grew out of an informal group of sailing friends active since 2007 and has achieved successes at the Austrian Offshore Championship in the ORC class.

History

The founding of the club was driven by founder Axel Dobrowolny’s personal passion for sailing, sparked at the age of seven at Lake Waldschach through a youth sailing week in the Optimist entry class. An informal group of sailing friends had already existed since 2007; through regular participation in offshore Big Boat Sailing regattas from 2007 onwards, a circle of sailors from Weiz formed around the founder. Since 2007 the group has taken part in numerous offshore regattas in the Adriatic, including the Austrian Offshore Championship, Business Cup, Offshore Challenge, Croatia Coast Cup, Kornati Cup and the Barcolana. Chairman and founder Axel Dobrowolny completed multi-year training as a state-certified sailing instructor and in 2015 was appointed examiner for offshore training by the Seefahrtsverband Süd. The club was officially founded in 2015 by Axel Dobrowolny and enables sailing and water sports enthusiasts of all ages to discover the sport, learn it professionally or obtain a skipper licence. At the Austrian Offshore Championship the club finished 3rd in 2011, became Austrian class champion in 2012 and took 2nd place in 2013 in the ORC without spinnaker class. In 2017 members ran a charity mulled-wine stall at the Weiz Christmas market. In 2018 the club entered the Barcolana in the Gulf of Trieste with a crew of more than twenty sailors and shore team members, one of the world’s largest sailing regattas. That same year the club had over 30 members. In 2019 it took part in the official regatta of Weiz’s partner town Grodzisk Mazowiecki with two boats and seven crew members, including a daily win. The club also upholds the tradition of sea shanties: the club band Love & Happiness, with board members Gert Stindl and Axel Dobrowolny, performs among other occasions at the Christmas concert in the club venue Plotzhirsch in Weiz.
