Albatros Yacht Club Bremerhaven e. V.
Albatros Yacht Club Bremerhaven e. V. is a family-friendly sailing club in Bremerhaven's fishing harbour with summer berths next to Nordsee Marina Kuhlmann. The club has its own pier with finger pontoons and water depths of up to five metres, a timber-block boathouse and a winter hall of about 1,000 square metres with 41 berths. Club life is shaped by joint spring and autumn sail-outs, work parties, lift dates, skipper evenings and social events. Founded in 1985 by seven water-sports enthusiasts, the AYC has grown into a young club with 75 members and an average age under 50.
History
Albatros Yacht Club Bremerhaven e. V. was founded on 17 February 1985 by seven dedicated water-sports enthusiasts. The early years were marked by the struggle for recognition of a claim to own club grounds and a pier in the fishing harbour; initially there was toing and froing within Labrador Harbour. In 1997 the new summer berth next to Nordsee Marina Kuhlmann was inaugurated and the pier connected to the piles. The election of Claus Frolow as 1st chairman and later of Holger Peters as treasurer brought a turn in the club's internal and external standing. After Claus Frolow's death in 2003, Holger Peters led the club as 1st chairman until 24 February 2017. In 2001, with around 3,000 member work hours and without borrowed capital, a timber-block boathouse with extensions was built. In February 2002 a severe storm destroyed the pier; in more than 2,000 work hours a new main pier with finger pontoons was built, financed by a loan from the state sports federation, a city grant and membership fees, so that boats could return for the 2002 season. In 2011 the club acquired from FBG a winter hall of about 1,000 square metres near the summer berth with direct access to the fishing harbour. Today the AYC has 75 members, offers 41 berths and is a family-friendly, comparatively young sailing club with an average age under 50; active members contribute spring and autumn work hours for grounds and pier.
