ASKÖ Gmunden Segeln

ASKÖ Gmunden Segeln (AGS) is the official sailing club on Lake Traunsee in Gmunden and one of five sailing clubs on the lake. The club is based at Traunsteinstraße 22 on the eastern shore of Lake Traunsee in the Gmunden bay and offers the ASKÖ pier with berths and buoy moorings as well as a well-equipped clubhouse with terrace. As a recognised training centre of the Austrian Sailing Federation (OeSV), it provides youth development with Optimist taster courses, ILCA 6 boats and a youth week as well as further training from basic sailing courses and the BfA inland licence to trim seminars. Regular regattas such as Traunsee Week, White Sails, Beer Can Race and the Weyrer Häferl shape the sporting programme; in 2023 AGS hosted the Surprise European Championship.

History

ASKÖ Gmunden Segeln looks back on a history dating to 1919, when ASKÖ Gmunden was founded as a workers' sports club shortly after the First World War. In 1947 the former shipyard of the Traunsee shipping company was leased and sports facilities were created by the members themselves. In 1988 the first pier for sailing boats was built; Hans Loistl founded the sailing section, and from 1989 annual club championships were held. In 2007 the sailing section was revived under new leadership; a storm caused severe damage to the pier, which was largely repaired through volunteer work. Founded as a section of ASKÖ Gmunden, AGS has operated as an independent branch club since 2016 while remaining closely linked to the main club. In 2011 AGS became a member of the Austrian Sailing Federation and has since taken an active part in Traunsee Week. In 2023 the club organised its first European Championship in the Surprise class; with more than 2,700 hours of volunteer work the event became a milestone. Today AGS is firmly established as one of five sailing clubs on Lake Traunsee and enjoys recognition beyond the region.
