Aabenraa Sejl Club
Aabenraa Sejl Club is the official sailing club of Aabenraa and sits in the middle of Aabenraa Fjord – a sheltered, scenic waterway with good conditions for beginners and experienced sailors. The modern, well-kept club marina at Kystvej 55 offers berths with electricity and water, Wi-Fi, shower facilities, a clubhouse, slipway and cranes as well as a motorhome pitch area. The programme includes racing, cruising, junior sailing, sea kayaking and model boats; the junior section trains on Mondays at the clubhouse. Founded in 1922, the club shapes the town’s harbour life and welcomes permanent members as well as visiting sailors.
History
On 12 August 1922 a group of citizens founded Aabenraa Sejl Club at Paulsens Gæstgivergård on Skibbroen. The first board included customs manager Ludvigsen as chair. From the start the club had 29 vessels and 72 members; roots reach via an earlier club that stalled during World War I back to around 1900. Early cooperation with the municipality brought winter storage in an aircraft hangar and, in 1926, inauguration of the first clubhouse “Kahytten” on Sydhavn mole. Cruising and racing shaped club life; navigation courses were held in 1926. In the 1930s the fleet temporarily shrank; during World War II membership and boats grew (around 150 members and 40 sailboats in 1942, later over 200 members) until leisure sailing was banned in 1943. After 1945 the sport recovered; in 1948 many Pirate dinghies were built. Harbour conflicts with livestock export led to moves toward Nyhavn and later the large marina at Kystvej. With a four-million-kroner gift from Michael Jebsen and municipal support, the new yacht harbour opened in 1975; the clubhouse was built with extensive member labour. In 1973 ASC ranked among the country’s larger clubs (223 active, 347 members in total). Later came a motorhome site (from about 1997, approved under camping rules in 2010), intensive regatta activity, Optimist and Laser events, junior programmes including Elite Aabenraa, new pontoons in 2012 and sea kayaking from 2021. For the centenary in 2022 the history was updated and the camper area expanded.
