Société Nautique de Genève

The Société Nautique de Genève (SNG) is Switzerland's largest water sports club with more than 4500 members, located directly on Lake Geneva in Cologny. Founded in 1872, the club brings together the Aviron, Cercle de la Voile, Yachting léger and Hélice sections under one roof, with a marina offering around 1000 berths, two cranes, a clubhouse, restaurant and sailing schools. The programme ranges from Optimist and ILCA training and the weekly Tuesday regattas to legendary events such as the Bol d'Or du Léman and the Translémanique en Solitaire. Young sailors are supported through the sailing school and can join the SNG Sailing Team for national and international competition. As the home club of Alinghi and a stage for major America's Cup success, the SNG stands for elite sport, tradition and a vibrant club community on Lake Geneva.

History

The Société Nautique de Genève was founded in 1872, initially focused on rowing on Lake Geneva. In 1892 the club took part in the Turin congress that laid the foundations for FISA. In 1903 the Cercle de la Voile and Hélice section were created; in 1907 the SNG acquired national authority status for Swiss racing yachting. The club won Olympic rowing gold in Paris in 1924. The Port-Noir clubhouse was inaugurated in 1933. The Bol d'Or du Léman was created in 1939 and remains one of the world's largest regattas on enclosed water. The Hélice section opened to water skiing in 1948. Yachting léger was established in 1965 for dinghies and multihulls. The BCGE Tour du Léman à l'Aviron was launched in 1972 for the centenary; the Translémanique en Solitaire followed in 1973. Alinghi won the America's Cup under SNG colours in 2003 and 2007. The club hosted the Little Cup in 2015; Max Wallenberg won the Optimist world title in 2016. New port infrastructure was officially inaugurated in 2020. The Fonds Ambition has supported elite athletes since 1998. Today the SNG is Switzerland's largest nautical club and organises major international regattas from the Bol d'Or and Translémanique to the International Optimist Team Race.
