Mecklenburger Segelverein e.V.
Mecklenburger Segelverein e.V. was founded on 17 June 1988 and is based at Wendorfer Strand between the pier and Wismar Yacht Club. The club grounds offer a sheltered private beach with ideal conditions for dinghy and catamaran sailors, a mooring field and berthing options for cutters and larger yachts nearby. Members from teenagers to retirees use Wismar Bay with free access to the Baltic Sea for sailing, paddling and surfing. The club hosts the long-established Pizza Open for A-Cat and Formula 18 as well as other regattas and club events. Around 80 active members maintain the shared grounds with clubhouse, sail lockers and motorhome pitches for visitors with a boat.
History
Mecklenburger Segelverein was founded on 17 June 1988, the former German Unity Day. At that time it was hard for sailors to understand why only a few privileged people were allowed to sail on the Mecklenburg coast. The GDR sports organisations DTSB and GST had no interest in granting sailors more freedom. In 1988, mainly students from Wismar University of Applied Sciences came together to found their own club and offer extended sailing opportunities to all interested sailors. The events of autumn 1989 allowed this goal to be achieved sooner than planned. The fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989 opened long-awaited freedoms for sailors and ended Stasi questioning of members. With Helmut Kohl's ten-point programme on 28 November 1989, German reunification began and the GDR was already dissolving in 1990. Like all mass organisations, the GST, which had operated the Wismar sea sports centre since 1956, also collapsed. Through the re-establishment of MSV on 15 January 1990 and registration as a registered association, MSV gained civil-law status. When former GST officials founded their own club in spring 1990 and began dividing GST assets, Mecklenburger Segelverein represented sailors' interests and prevented the sale of equipment and infrastructure. MSV united all former Wismar sea sports sections and took over the entire fleet and water sports facility of GST in Wismar-Wendorf. Ownership of the GST sea sports centre passed to DSSV when GST was dissolved in summer 1990. On 2 October 1990 the MSV board signed a lease with DSSV. With reunification, the Treuhandanstalt gained control of the property used by the club. On 13 July 1992 the board had to sign a lease with the Treuhandanstalt. Only on 25 May 1994 was the club grounds with its buildings assigned to the Hanseatic City of Wismar. Wismar took over the tenant Mecklenburger Segelverein e.V. and obliged it to use the property solely for non-profit purposes. In 2006 an hereditary building rights contract was concluded with the city of Wismar.
