Märkischer Seglerverein Beetzsee e.V.
Märkischer Seglerverein Beetzsee e.V. is a traditional sailing club in Brandenburg an der Havel with more than 100 years of history, located at the southern end of Lake Beetzsee near the lock to the Silokanal federal waterway. The club grounds offer moorings, a boathouse, showers, toilets and a barbecue hut; touring boaters can find a quiet berth marked with the "Gelbe Welle" sign. MSVB is a member of the German Sailing Association and the Brandenburg Sailing Federation, offering regatta sailing, cruising and an active youth section as part of the regional sailing training centre in Brandenburg an der Havel. Classes sailed include Optimist, 420er, Ixylon, Pirat, O-Jolle, OK-Jolle, Europe, J/70 and 15er Jollenkreuzer. Each year the club hosts the Kon-Tiki Race in May and the Inselcup in June, and supports youth development through weekly training and joint regatta participation.
History
On 12 April 1907 the original Märkischer Segler Verein e.V. was founded in Brandenburg/Havel. The boat shed was completed in 1911, the club joined the German Sailing Federation as a regional association in 1912, and the boathouse was extended in 1937. In 1945 the fleet was moved out of storage and severely damaged; an unofficial final meeting of MSV members took place in September. On 1 September 1951 the sailing section of BSG Motor Nord (supported by Volkswerft "Ernst Thälmann") was founded. In 1954 the section received the old motor barge "Hanno Günther", and in 1955 work began to convert the old boathouse into a solid building and to take over and rebuild the site of the former fertiliser factory through members' own labour. A manually operated crane was installed in 1957, and a new motor barge "Hanno Günther" was built in 1962. In 1963 BSG Stahl (supported by VEB Stahl- und Walzwerk Brandenburg) took over the sailing section. In 1988 the city of Brandenburg transferred use of Rabbit Island as a sailing base to the sailing section. On 22 May 1990 the new Märkischer Segler Verein Beetzsee e.V. was founded; in 1991 MSVB joined the Brandenburg Sailing Federation and the German Sailing Association. A new communal room was built in 1994/95, and part of the site was converted into a youth centre in 1999/2000. Cooperation with Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences began in 2004, and the club joined the "Gelbe Welle" tourism initiative in 2005. On 16/17 June 2007 the club celebrated its 100th anniversary. Over its century-long history MSVB has produced many successful regatta sailors, including Anke Helbig as the most successful female sailor in Brandenburg, Robert Heymann and Thomas Schüler in P-boats, and Marc Werner as regional chairman for the Europe class in Brandenburg. In 2008 the Kon-Tiki Race was the state championship in the Ixylon class; the Beetzsee clubs founded the Brandenburg Cup for Ixylon. The club hosts the Kon-Tiki Race and Inselcup annually and is part of the regional sailing training centre in Brandenburg an der Havel.
