History

Münchener Ruder- und Segelverein “Bayern” von 1910 e.V. was founded on 12 August 1910 as Münchener Ruder-Verein “Bayern” e.V., emerging from members of the Münchner Rudergesellschaft of 1899 and the Münchner Ruder-Club of 1880. In 1925 women took part in the foundation festival for the first time; in 1936 the Bayernheim clubhouse was inaugurated. During the Second World War the Wehrmacht seized the Bayernheim (1942), after which the American occupying forces used the grounds and building (1945). In 1947 members reclaimed the destroyed site. In 1948 the club merged with Segelverein Starnberg to form Münchener Ruder- und Segelverein “Bayern” von 1910 e.V. and rebuilt with around 80 members. Later decades brought a new boat hall (1959), the Starnberg school rowing centre (1964), harbour construction from 1978 to 1980, and in 1985 the 75th anniversary with the first Roseninsel eights race. In 1999 the new club building with boat hall, sail loft, training facilities and casino was opened. In 2001 the club acquired neighbouring federal railway land and integrated sailors from ESV-Neuaubing. For the centenary in 2010 the former ESV harbour was renovated and a new boathouse built; MRSV received the Federal President’s sports plaque. In 2011 the new harbour and boathouse opened; the Dragons anniversary regatta became the annual Starnberg Dragon Prize and the H-Boat event became the Bayern Cup. Today MRSV is among the largest and most active clubs on Lake Starnberg and the only local club where members can both row and/or sail.
