Malchiner Segler-Verein e.V.

Malchiner Segler-Verein e.V. is a long-established sailing club in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, founded in 1927 as Malchiner Wassersportverein and registered as an independent Malchiner Segler-Verein e.V. since 1992. Its main waters are Lake Malchin and Lake Kummerow, linked via the Dahmer Canal and the River Peene in the Mecklenburg Lake District nature park, much of which is a European bird sanctuary. At the club grounds at the Schutzhütte shelter in Gorschendorf, the club operates a sailing centre with a sport harbour, two new facilities with 22 berthing boxes alongside the old basin, and the Kösters Eck water-hiking rest place. The statutes promote regatta, cruising and family sailing, youth development and environmental protection; regular spring and autumn regattas, the Blue Ribbon of Lake Kummerow, opening and closing-of-season events shape the year. Since 2001 the club has actively revived youth sailing again, including sailing camps and training in Optimist, Cadet, OK-Jolle and 420er classes.

History

On 18 March 1927, 27 enthusiasts met in Malchin to found Malchiner Wassersportverein; Hermann Müller became first chairman. The fleet already comprised 19 sailing boats and 8 motor boats. Hermann Puls took over the chair in 1934, Heini Köster became official DSV measurer in 1935, and the club was entered in the register on 3 October 1935. A clubhouse on Lake Kummerow was built in April 1936. After war and political upheaval, a sailing section with 28 members was re-established on 12 August 1949 at Malchin station hotel under Herbert Gertz. In 1950 Paul Tanck, Heini Köster and Hannes Peters won the R-boat class at Plau Sailing Week. The Blue Ribbon of Lake Kummerow was first sailed in 1952. In the 1960s spring and autumn regattas and the Blue Ribbon became fixtures. The 40th anniversary in 1967 saw 65 members. From the 1970s Gerhard Schönrock built up youth sailing with home-built Optimists and 420s; Malchin became a training centre and talents such as Paul-Michael Hedke and Uta Koch achieved district, GDR and international success. The 50th anniversary in 1977 had 98 members and 49 boats. Membership peaked at 157 in the 1980s. In 1990 partnerships were formed with clubs in Itzehoe, Wilster and Paderborn. In 1992 the independent Malchiner Segler-Verein e.V. was founded and registered on 7 December. After reunification the Schutzhütte site in Gorschendorf was developed into an attractive sport harbour with new berths, pontoons and the Kösters Eck rest place inaugurated in 2000. Udo Dohms has chaired the club since 1999; at the 75th anniversary in 2002 the club had 102 members and 46 sailing boats. Youth sailing restarted in 2001 with a three-day camp for 12 children. Growing demand for larger keelboats led to two new facilities with 22 boxes and relocation of the sailing centre from Malchin to the Schutzhütte. Today Malchin sailors jointly host regattas on Lake Kummerow with friends from Demmin and Loitz, including spring and autumn regattas, the Blue Ribbon, opening and closing events and the Friedrich Gültzow memorial regatta.
