Westerås Segelsällskap
Westerås Segelsällskap (WSS) is a traditional sailing club in Västerås on Lake Mälaren and has offered sailing and boating life since 1883. The club centre is on the club island Kedjeön east of Ridön in the Ridöarkipelagen nature reserve, with fixed wooden jetties, an extended floating pontoon, clubhouse and sauna. Members have electricity, Wi-Fi, barbecue areas and club small boats to borrow; guests are welcome for a harbour fee. The programme includes practice sailing, the Västra Mälarens Seglingsserie series, work weekends and festivals such as Midsummer. A junior section with camp and gear exists; the junior committee is currently dormant.
History
According to the club tagline, Westerås Segelsällskap has existed since 1883 and fosters sailing and boating life in Västerås. Club island Kedjeön lies east of Ridön and south of Fröholmen lighthouse in the Ridöarkipelagen nature reserve. In autumn 2016 and spring 2017 the wooden jetty was extended and fitted with new power posts. In June 2022 the northern floating pontoon was lengthened. In 2018 Båtsamverkan Västerås was formed with VFBAB clubs among others to improve boating security. Kedjeön regularly hosts work weekends; a junior camp in the harbour was documented in 2021. In 2024 the organisation is described with a board and committees for Kedjeön/harbour, activities, boat life and communications; the junior committee is dormant. In April 2026 the old magnetic key-card system at the clubhouse was replaced by RFID tags.
