WSZV Aqua
WSZV Aqua is the student sailing association of Wageningen University & Research and Aeres University of Applied Sciences with around 60 members. The club is based on the Rhine at Waterscouting Musinga-Rijn in Wageningen and sails there several times a week, especially during Thursday association evenings from 17:30. Its own fleet includes ILCA 7 (Laser Radial/Standard), Laser Vago, a 16² Klasse and a Lelievlet; Valken from WSV Vada are also used. In addition to regular sailing on the Rhine, Aqua organises sailing weekends in Friesland, training weekends, participation in regattas such as the Nestor Trophy and Dutch Student Championships, as well as a varied programme of shore activities and introduction periods for new students.
History
The history of WSZV Aqua begins on 19 May 1988, when a group of enthusiastic Wageningen students founded WSZV Aquacadabra. In the following years the association grew into a fixture of student life in Wageningen with regular sailing on the Rhine and an expanding fleet. After years under the name Aquacadabra, the name WSZV Aqua was officially adopted in 2009, having already been used informally for many years. Since October 2018 the club has three types of bonds: year layers (cohorts of new members who choose their own names and organise activities), societies (groups with specific characteristics, such as Damesch van Rumoribus) and disputen (well-known groups of members and alumni). Each year around 19 May the club celebrates its birthday and wishes for a good sailing season. Aqua is a member of V.N.S.Z. Nestor, the umbrella organisation of Dutch student sailing associations founded in 1967, which organises the Nestor Trophy among other events. Since 2018 Aqua has participated in the Nestor Trophy team sailing and competes in other student regattas such as the Dutch Student Championships. Over the decades the fleet grew with boats including the Lelievlet Rán, Laser Standard/Radial De Studiedokter (purchased 2025), Laser Vago Swift (2024) and the 16² Brak Mormel (2026). The club offers a broad range of sailing activities on the Rhine, in Friesland and at competitions across the country, and regularly organises training weekends, sailing weekends, theory evenings and social shore activities.
