History

Wassersportgemeinschaft Rumeln-Kaldenhausen 1961 e.V. (WRK) was founded in 1961 in western Duisburg. Under the motto of leisure and promoting watersports, the club at Toeppersee Rumeln grew over more than six decades into a fixture of the regional watersports scene. Earlier accounts mentioned around 400 members; according to the annual general meeting the current membership is 286, the club is debt-free and projects have been supported with grants. Volker Treder chaired the club for 15 years as 1st chair and handed over to Lukas Dunkel; Benjamin Auerbach became 2nd chair – a generational change from the club youth. Sporting life is shaped by Schwertzugvogel events such as the May regatta and Lower Rhine championship as well as traditional season opening and closing races. The youth section maintains the sports exchange with Calais and uses stand-up paddle boards from Sportjugend Duisburg. Sportbootführerschein inland and sea training, Wednesday club evenings and the club kitchen run by Ilona and Uwe Mauermann are part of club life. Wolfgang Nawroth was made an honorary member; long-standing members were honoured for 25 to 60 years of loyalty.
