Segelclub 1978 Senftenberg e.V.
Segelclub 1978 Senftenberg e.V. is a non-profit sailing club on Lake Senftenberg in the Lusatian Lake District, based in Niemtsch Bay west of Senftenberg. On the leased grounds stand the member-built clubhouse (“Hütte”), facilities for youth work, a jetty for a limited number of small cruising dinghies, and storage for boats ashore. The club runs an active youth section with club Optimists, ILCA and 420s, seasonal training from April to October, and regattas such as the Seepokal. Since its beginnings in the 1970s and founding in 1978, the focus has been on youth work, community and sailing for all ages.
History
The history of Segelclub 1978 Senftenberg e.V. begins with the flooding of the former open-cast mine from 1967; in 1972 Lake Senftenberg reached its planned water level. In 1975 ten sailors formed an interest group and built the first jetty. In 1976 the ice-damaged jetty was replaced and the sailing section of BSG Aktivist Brieske-Senftenberg was founded. From 1977 members built the sailing hut to replace a burned shelter; the shell was finished in 1979 and the clubhouse in 1981. From 1983 the club took part in the BDS cruising competition of the GDR; in 1986 it had 66 members including 13 juniors and 7 children. After German reunification in 1990 the founding assembly of Segelclub Senftenberg e.V. was held. In 1993 there were 40 adult members; in 1994 the name became Segelclub 1978 Senftenberg e.V. In 1995 the youth group published the club paper Senftenberger SeglerKurier. Founder Felix Fuchs died in 1996. From 1999 to 2003 the Lausitzpokal regatta was held annually; a new jetty and power supply from the neighbouring campsite were added. Later years brought upgrades to electrics, sanitation, kitchen, loft and website. In 2007 the youth group received two new Optimists funded by the Tietz family; in 2008 a powered dinghy was bought for race and training safety at the 30th anniversary. Further works covered jetties (2011), slipway (2013), moorings and outdoor table tennis (2015) and the ladies’ toilet (2016). At the 40th anniversary in 2018 the club had 50 adult members, 4 dormant memberships and 12 youth members. Today about 60 adults and around 15 children and juniors are organised; a six-member board maintains and develops the club.
