Wisby Segelsällskap
Wisby Segelsällskap (WSS) is one of Sweden's oldest sailing clubs and is based at Slottshamnen in Visby on Gotland. The club offers a clubhouse, mast shed, winter storage and harbour berths as well as a certified sailing school for juniors and adults from the age of twelve. Six club boats of the 606 class are used for training; weekly courses and regattas such as the Wednesday Cup and Summer Cup shape the programme. Since its founding in 1883, racing and cruising have defined the club's history – from the Wisby Cup race to the forerunners of Gotland Runt.
History
Wisby Segelsällskap (WSS) is one of Sweden's oldest sailing clubs and was founded in 1883; its first chairman was Lars Kolmodin. From the very beginning, racing and cruising dominated club life. Early boats were mainly workboats and smaller cutters; later archipelago cruisers or yachts became common. A key figure in the early history was Dr A.P. Skoglar, who with the yawl-rigged pleasure yacht Bölja sailed long-distance voyages around the entire Baltic Sea. In 1907 and 1908 WSS hosted the Wisby Cup race from Dalarö to Visby and back. Those races marked the start of what later became the Visby races and over many years developed into Gotland Runt. Today the clubhouse at Slottshamnen, mast shed, winter storage, Wednesday Cup, Summer Cup and club and Gotland championships continue that tradition.
