Westerviks segelsällskap Wikingarna
Westerviks segelsällskap Wikingarna (WSSW) is the official sailing club in Västervik on Sweden’s east coast. The club has its own harbour on Notholmen in a central location, a clubhouse, pontoons with Y-booms and buoys, and three cranes for boats and masts. The youth section and sailing school train young sailors in club-owned and private dinghies, supported on the water by two motorboats. Regular club regattas such as the Stora and Lilla Wiking Race as well as joint cruises shape the sporting programme. Historically the club dates back to the 1920s; the clubhouse was completed in 1946 and the harbour on Notholmen remains the centre of club life.
History
The history of Westerviks segelsällskap Wikingarna is documented in club photographs going far back. As early as 1929 an autumn party was held in Kungsträdgården; in the early 1930s the sailing committee was active on Ekholmen. In the 1940s Ekholmen shaped club life: the 1942 Ekholmsträffen, a documented board in 1945 and gatherings of Wiking boats. In 1946 the clubhouse was completed. In 1956 Walter Liffner raced the Wiking boat Framåt in the jubilee regatta. Other historic motifs show Ragnar Karlsson’s Wiking boat Måsen, starts off Ekholmen and Eric Fleetwood in the C-canoe Vindlek. In the 1980s training evenings took place. Today the club harbour is on Notholmen in central Västervik; yard, property, finance and youth sections as well as training and social club hosting organise day-to-day operations.
