History

The construction of Lake Altmühl created new leisure and recreation opportunities for residents in and around Wald. To offer water sports locally, SSCW e.V. was founded in 1984. On a stormy night in 1984, Surf- und Segelclub Wald e.V. was established. At that time, the New Franconian Lake District was still a wet meadow rather than a water sports dream. The artificial Lake Altmühl was conceived in 1970, construction began in 1974, and flooding started in 1985 after SSCW had been founded and unanimously approved the flooding. The overflow of the River Altmühl was turned into a virtue and the 4.5 km² water surface was taken into use, except for the nature reserve on Bird Island. The purpose of SSCW is to promote water sports. The club's goals are active leisure for members in both sporting and social terms. Since 1990 the club has cooperated with Stephani Primary School Gunzenhausen within differentiated physical education. Youth sailing weeks take place every year. After moving into the sailing clubhouse on Lake Altmühl in 1994, the club offers its members excellent conditions for practising sailing. The clubhouse was built, completed and opened in record time through joint effort and is considered one of the most beautiful places to enjoy an unobstructed view over the lake. SSCW also hosts the traditional Makrelenregatta every year. Since 9 May 1989 SSCW has been a member of the Bavarian Sports Association (membership no. 51161) and since 28 March 1996 of the German Sailing Association (membership no. BA223). In addition to serious regatta sailing, the club is characterised by a unique community. Guests and new members are warmly welcome. Over the decades the club has developed into a centre for inclusive sailing with Special Olympics and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2024 at the clubhouse at Seezentrum Wald.
